By a 5-1 vote on Thursday, the Oregon State Board of Education voted to ban schools from using American Indian mascots, The Oregonian reported. Schools may keep their “Warriors” or “Chiefs” team names, but must replace logos that reference American Indians or American Indian culture.
This is just going to cost us money that we dont have to fund the freaking schools.
And of course they didn’t bother with other mascots.
As far as I know, there has never even been complaints about it.
There have been many complaints, in a variety of states and provinces on this issue, from a number of Natives and allies. They’re pretty easily findable if you use Google. Most of our voices are drowned out, however, in a sea of “get over it”, “it’s not really offensive”, “it’s not really racist”, “you’re making something out of nothing”, “you can’t own this/it’s art”, etc etc etc.
I can’t comment on the money issue, but at least at this point if they’d stop PRODUCING racist gear it would be a step in the right direction.
I honestly don’t see it as racist. They aren’t degrading them.
I’m from Oregon, and the money issue for our schools is ridiculous. So having to change everything is unnecessary. My own high school is the Rebels. For years they have wanted to change it. And Oregon didn’t look at other schools with mascots of Spartans, Celts, and other of that sort.
Just my thought.
Are you Native? Because if not, then I really don’t give a shit whether or not you see it as racist. And, even if you are Native, you just demonstrated that you didn’t even know that the mascot issue was being as heavily disputed as it was in your state. A lot of Native people are saying that it IS racist and that it IS degrading and with good reason. (If you want to know why, google it or check out some of the tags here on tumblr. It’s been discussed plenty.) If these schools want to keep their funding, then they have the option of changing mascots. We’ve had a similar law in Wisconsin for a while, and I promise that the sky did not fall for public schools. Many things have contributed to financial difficulties for public schools all over the nation, but this ain’t and won’t be what broke the camel’s back.
No, I’m not. And apparently people can’t have other opinions either. Oregon, from what I heard, has the worse state funding for our schools. I agree though that the worse names should be banned. But using warriors, chiefs, and braves? No.
